Girl Scout will coordinate summer food program in Edinburgh

Abby Sweet, a senior at Southwestern High School, has been approved the Girl Scouts of Central Indiana and the Indiana Department of Education to coordinate and run the USDA and DOE Summer Food Program in Edinburgh as her Gold Girl Scout Award project. 

In coordination with Edinburgh United Methodist Church and Edinburgh Parks and Recreation, Sweet has announced plans to participate in the Summer Food Service Program. 

Free meals will be available to all children 18 and younger and to people over 18 who are enrolled in a state-approved educational program for the mentally or physically disabled. Meals will be provided to all children without charge. There will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service. 

Because of donations from Edinburgh Tri Kappa, Dr. Mark Smith, Dr. James Kozarek and Dr. Greg Sweet, Abby Sweet will also be able to feed families, including parents and caregivers of children in the community. Families from Edinburgh and Southwestern school districts, Shelby, Bartholomew, and Johnson counties are all invited to receive free meals on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the summer. 

Scheduled meals include pizza, chicken nuggets, burgers, hot dogs, and more. Meals come with a fruit and vegetable and white or chocolate milk. Sweet also will have games and materials to promote a healthy lifestyle each week, along with special dessert treats for each child. 

Meals will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis June 5 to July 28.
