Overview: Administer programs that serve the children and families of Grace UMC.  This includes Sunday School, Super Church, Bible School, and seasonal programming.  As part of a ministry team, you would oversee the spiritual formation of 3 to 12 year olds.

Job Summary

The Director of Children’s Ministries (“Director”) will direct and coordinate Children’s Ministries and  
              as a team member of the Grace Church staff to plan and coordinate Children’s Ministries into the life of   
              the Church and to share in the mission of Grace Church.  This includes ministries relating to infants
              (nursery) and children (elementary, including 4th, 5th & 6th Grade “Sprouts” program). 



  • The Director will work with and report directly to the Associate Pastor weekly.
  • The Director will also be assigned a liaison member of the Staff Parish Relations Committee, with whom the Director will communicate about Children’s Ministries and seek counsel and input as necessary.
  •  The Director will also form an advisory group of volunteers, interested parents and/or youth (Children’s Ministry Team) with whom the Director will communicate about Children’s Ministries and seek counsel and input as necessary.

Terms of Employment:  

  • Full time\Exempt

  • A strong and growing personal commitment to God and His teachings, and to the Church’s mission of helping children grow in their faith.
  • A college degree is required.  Previous experience working in children’s ministry is preferred.
  • Possess positive relational and personal skills in communication.
  • A heart, passion and love for children.
  • Team orientated and able to work with a variety of persons
  • Organized, creative, and strong oral and written communication skills
  • Understand social media and the use of Facebook, Twitter, and the church’s website, along with special video presentations
  • Familiarity with the United Methodist Church and Wesleyan theological tradition is encouraged, though not required.
  • A background check is required.


  • Assist the Associate Pastor and Children’s Ministry Team in carrying out the vision of our Children’s Ministry through programs, special events and relationships.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings.
  • Work with the Children’s Ministry Team of Grace Church and be open to other responsibilities as given.
  • Recruit, train, and oversee scheduling of Sunday School teachers and curriculum.
  • Plan, coordinate and lead weekly Super Church worship experiences for children during the three worship services, recruiting laity as needed.
  • Plan, coordinate and lead monthly Family Nights throughout the school year to provide opportunities for families to gather for fellowship.
  • Provide regular communication regarding various children’s ministries events/activities to families and church,  utilizing appropriate church communication avenues, social media, the church website.
  • Lead Children’s Time in worship once per month.
  • Recruit, train and steward adult volunteers for all children’s programs.  Ensure all volunteers participate in Safe Sanctuary training annually.
  • Promote and share summer camping opportunities with families and children.
  • Coordinate, promote and lead Sprouts (4th/5th/6th graders) through bi-monthly gatherings and special events.
  • Plan and implement special events and activities for children and families as planned by the Children’s Ministry team and Associate Pastor, such as day camps and VBS.
  • Work to involve and welcome new families and members in ministry in the life of the church.
  • Provide pastoral care and show care toward children when they are sick or injured.
  • Foster spiritual formation in children as they become aware of God’s love for them and His creation.
  • Equip parents to respond to their children as they develop as young believers.
  • Work with the Office Manger to maintain a database of families and volunteers who are actively involved in programs.
  • Create an up to date weekly, monthly and yearly calendar of youth activities which is provided to the Associate Pastor and lay leadership.
  • Recruit, train and build relationships with adults who will volunteer to assist with events, making sure adult volunteers receive background checks, training and ongoing supervision.
  • Collaborate and coordinate events with the Director of Youth Ministries to facilitate the transition between children and youth programs.
  • Plan continuing education experiences with others in Children’s Ministries to learn more about models and programs in children’s ministries (e.g., via Indiana Conference, Center for Congregations, Central District, Group, other churches, etc.).
  • In conjunction with the Director of the All God’s Children Preschool, promote Children’s Ministry to all preschool families.
  • Work with the Office Managers to ensure room usage regarding church calendar.
  • Work with the Custodial Manager to keep spaces and rooms clean and efficient for the workings of ministry.
  • Keep the children’s ministry office clean and respectable.
  • Develop the annual Children’s Ministry budget, and report to the Business Manager as well as the Children’s Ministry Team on budget issues.
