Rainbows & Rhymes Preschool and Child Care Director

Position Description

Rainbows & Rhymes (R & R) is a well-established preschool and child care outreach of First United Methodist Church (FUMC) Crawfordsville.  In August 2020, the program expanded from a morning only preschool to a year-round AM preschool/PM child care full day program to accommodate identified child care needs in our community. We are a growing Registered Ministry and CCDF tuition voucher provider currently recognized as Level 1 in Indiana’s Paths to Quality rating program.  We aim to be a Level 3 program during 2021.

The R & R director will provide oversight and management of the preschool/childcare program.  The director will ensure that the purpose and mission of R & R as determined by the Rainbows & Rhymes Ministry Board (RRMBoard) is accomplished.  The purpose is to provide top quality, developmentally age-appropriate programming which nurtures and challenges every student cognitively, physically, social/emotionally, and spiritually. Collaborating with the Pastor, the RRMBoard, and other staff, the director will ensure that R & R meets the educational needs of preschool children while providing them with a foundation for Christian living.

Qualifications

·       Personal commitment to and public affirmation of the Christian faith

·       High School Diploma and one of:  Associate or Bachelor’s degree in early childhood education or elementary education or Child Development Associate (CDA) credential

·       Work experience in an early childhood program or elementary school

·       Personal qualities of honesty, integrity, responsibility, and kindness

·       Ability to establish and maintain good interpersonal relationships with teachers, parents, children, and church staff

·       Excellent verbal and written communication skills

·       Strong organizational skills including time management, flexibility, and problem solving

·       Computer literacy skills to efficiently use Microsoft Office Suite programs

·       Residence in and community involvement in Montgomery County preferred

Job Responsibilities

GENERAL

·       Assume responsibility for the daily operations of R & R, ensuring a clean, safe, and appropriate environment

·       Ensure facility and program comply with all local, state, and federal laws and regulations, including our Indiana early childhood program certification regulations

·       Plan and conduct meetings with the RRMBoard monthly or as needed

·       Ensure adherence to R & R and FUMC policies and procedures

·       Communicate with church staff regarding school closings, special events

·        Coordinate facility and maintenance needs with Maintenance Supervisor using work orders

·       Act as liaison between the RRMBoard, R & R staff, student’s families, and FUMC staff

·       Attend FUMC staff and FUMC Church Council meetings as the R & R representative

·       Coordinate with FUMC Children’s Ministry leadership to promote church activities with R & R families

·       Be an active member of the Montgomery County Child Care Coalition

 

OFFICE/ADMINISTRATIVE

·       Inform the church administrative assistant when director is out of the building and clarify who is supervising

·       Manage tuition billing/payments, payroll submission, scholarship fund expenditures, program purchasing, and grant expenditures with church administrative assistant

·       Implement the CACFP meal reimbursement program with the R & R Food Service manager and the church administrative assistant

·       Prepare monthly financial statements for RRMBoard

·       Maintain complete and current staff, volunteer, and student files

·       Order and purchase needed supplies while maintaining an orderly supply room

·       Plan and conduct registration and enrollment

·       Evaluate and award scholarship requests with the RRMBoard

·       Create emergency procedures with RRMBoard and conduct emergency drills as required

·       Support fundraising events to benefit R & R

·       Maintain/achieve program certifications:  Registered Ministry, CCDF Provider, VCP, and Level 3 Paths to Quality

·       Create annual budget by December 1 with RRMBoard

 

CURRICULUM / STAFF

·       Create staff job descriptions and policy manual with the RRMBoard

·       Interview, hire, annually evaluate, and dismiss staff with the RRMBoard

·       Establish a list of substitutes and necessary written procedures and arrange substitutes as needed (The director may need to cover classes in emergencies)

·       Respond to and resolve personnel matters; involve the RRMBoard when appropriate

·       Communicate proactively with all staff

·       Give classroom support, regularly checking on each class for concerns

·       Collaborate with teachers on daily schedules for classes

·       Oversee and assist in proper implementation of chosen curricula

·       Support staff dealing with student behaviors and issues

·       Conduct monthly staff meetings

·       Partner with the Crawfordsville District Public Library, including Book Buddies program

 

PROGRAM PROMOTION

·       Maintain a regularly updated Facebook page for Rainbows & Rhymes and church website Rainbows & Rhymes page

·       Provide monthly articles for Chimes publication; utilize The Weekly Post email message for program highlights and announcements

·       Provide promotional slides to be shown at Sunday services and the Education Building Welcome Center

·       Speak at church services and events to keep congregation updated about R & R

·       Publicize enrollment information to the community, area businesses, Wabash College, Willson Preschool, area churches without preschools, and potential student families

·       Periodically submit photographs / narratives of program highlights to community newspapers

·       Identify appropriate grant opportunities and assist in application and management of grants

 

FAMILIES / STUDENTS

·       Develop the Parent Handbook with the RRMBoard and revise at least annually

·       Plan and conduct parent orientation sessions at least annually

·       Provide support and maintain an open line of communication with each family

·       Communicate information regarding special events, contagions, COVID, and church activities

·       Contact parents if necessary for students to be sent home during the day

·       Isolate and care for sick children until parent arrives

·       Arrange and participate in annual parent conferences for each student

 

Position Details

·        This position is a salaried position with no paid insurance benefits.

·       The minimum expected work day is 7:30 – 4:00 with 30 minutes for lunch.

·       All R & R paid holidays (up to 7 annually) and an additional 15 days of paid PTO are available each calendar year. PTO includes sick and vacation time that may be taken in ½ day increments but may not be taken during the week prior to the start of the summer term or the fall term.  Unused days do not carry over to the next calendar year.

·       The director will report to and be evaluated by their FUMC Staff Parish Liaison and the RRMBoard.
