Expectations: $200 weekly. The church organist will instrumentally lead the congregational singing, accompany the church choir, and support worship service with appropriate musical offerings.

Accountability: The organist is directly responsible to the Pastor. Employment, evaluation, and compensation are in the hands of the Staff/Parish Relations Committee.

Abilities: The church organist must be an accomplished musician and be able to play the Allen organ to its capacity. This person should have an understanding of a wide range of church music. He/she will need to have sensitivity to the liturgy of the church and an ability to lead the congregation musically as well as be able to deal patiently and pleasantly with members of the congregation and staff.

Assignments and Responsibilities: The person filling this position will…

o Select, practice, and present instrumental music for the Sunday services, including Prelude, Offertory and Communion, Responses, Hymns, and Postludes. He/she should be familiar with the music in The United Methodist Hymnal and The Faith We Sing.
o Be aware of the lectionary and seasons of the church year in selecting instrumental music for services.
o Accompany the choir at their rehearsals and in the church services; practice and prepare choral accompaniments.
o Accompany other ensembles and musicians in rehearsals and in the church services.
o Play for wedding and funeral services held in the church according to their availability.
o Work with the Pastor and his/her liturgical leadership of the congregation.
o Attend Worship Committee meetings convened by the Pastor when applicable.
o Look for and prepare new music to increase the repertoire and bring new music into the life of the church.
o Assist the Pastor and Board of Trustees in awareness of organ maintenance issues, and arranging regular maintaining of the instrument.

Performance and Evaluation:  The Church Organist will have his/her job performance and wage rate reviewed annually in the fall by the Staff/Parish Relations Committee.  The SPRC will make any recommendations for changes in this job description or the Church Organist’s wages to the Administrative Board.  If either the Church Organist or Bethany United Methodist Church at the recommendation of the SPRC wishes to terminate employment, a minimum of THIRTY DAYS notice shall be given.
