May 5, 2019 @ 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm

Free
Grace, North United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Shannon Priddy

Dr. Serene Jones, Union Theological Seminary President.

One of the country’s foremost theologians will share her thoughts about grace and its importance to today’s society on Sunday, May 5 at North United Methodist Church.

Rev. Dr. Serene Jones, president of Union Theological Seminary in New York City, will present a lecture on grace that afternoon at North following a free luncheon at the church, which is located at 3808 North Meridian Street in Indianapolis. The FREE lunch and lecture will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

She will also deliver the sermon during the church’s two regular worship services at 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. that morning.

Dr. Jones’ presentations are open to the public and free of charge thanks to a generous grant from the William E. Schmidt Foundation.

Dr. Jones is the first lecturer in the North Church Series on Theology and Contemporary Issues, which will explore the intersection between theology and major issues facing the world today. The series is in honor of Rev. Richard and Anna Lee Hamilton. The former was a student at Union Theological Seminary and a longtime pastor at North.

A highly respected scholar and public intellectual, Dr. Jones is the 16th president of Union Theological Seminary and the first woman to head that 182-year-old, nondenominational seminary. She occupies the Johnston Family Chair for Religion and Democracy.

She is a past president of the American Academy of Religion, which annually hosts the world’s largest gathering of scholars of religion.

Dr. Jones came to Union after 17 years at Yale University, where she was the Titus Street Professor of Theology at the Divinity School, and chairperson of the university’s program in women, gender and sexuality studies in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

She holds degrees from the University of Oklahoma, Yale Divinity School and Yale University. She is ordained in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the United Church of Christ.

She is the author of several books and a popular public speaker. The media often asks her to comment on major issues impacting society because of her deep grounding in theology, politics, women’s studies, economics, race studies, history, and ethics.
