LEADERSHIP BIOS AND WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS
Staff-Parish Relations Committee
Leader: Ann Handshu – How well a church staff and the congregation work relationally can make all the difference in its
ability to be a vibrant and healthy congregation. This interactive training covers not only the team’s responsibilities but also how to be
successful in writing job expectations, pastoral assessments and/or evaluations, avoiding conflict, and team dynamics. In addition, preparing for leadership changes will also be discussed. In order to be most effective, this training is intended for the entire SPRC* including pastors. (*If your church uses the single board leadership model, this would include your entire leadership team.)
“Moving from Passive to Participative Worship”
Leader: Dr. Constance Cherry – Dr. Cherry is Professor of Worship and Pastoral Ministry at Indiana Wesleyan University and Pastor of Grant UMC, Fairmount. Constance is an experienced worship leader, musician, and pastor, having served in local church ministry for many years. She is a published author, composer, and hymn writer. Her first book, The Worship Architect: A Blueprint for Designing Culturally Relevant and Biblically Faithful Services is used by many churches and as a required text at more than 150 institutions of higher education worldwide. Constance is an elder in the West Ohio Conference.
Passive worship can be a problem in worship today regardless of worship style. Learn how to move your congregation from spectators to participants. Discover why participatory worship is so important to all generations of worshipers. Explore very practical ideas for improving participation in congregations of any size and worship style
“I’m on the Church Council/Ad Board, now what? What about Trustees?”
Leader – David Johns – David is the North Central District Lay Leader and serves on the District’s Operational Team, Leadership Team, and Lay Servant Ministry Team. He’s a member of the Conference Board of Laity and the Church Development Grant Committee. At Shiloh UMC, Kokomo, he is the Church Council chairperson and a longtime adult Sunday School teacher. He and his wife, Eileen, have four adult children. David retired from the Delphi Corporation in 2015 where he held various global management positions in Information Technology. He has a B.S.B.A. from Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana and an M.S. in Manufacturing Operations from Kettering University in Flint, Michigan. This class is designed for those who serve on, or chair, Church Councils or Ad Boards, or serve as Trustees. We’ll discuss the roles, responsibilities, and purpose of the governing board, the responsibilities of the Trustees and how that relates to both Trustees and other church leaders, we’ll share some techniques to improve meeting effectiveness, and explore ways to ensure Christ-centered meetings. The class content is primarily independent of governing board structure (traditional or single board), but we’ll address any items related to this as they arise.
Finance
Leader: Don Spence – Don has an MBA in Finance. He has been a bank CFO, the controller of several successful companies and for the last 17 years, he has worked as a consultant for churches and business as owner of DLS Financial Solutions, LLC. Please join Don in discussing the financial management of your church. The session on finance will be designed to answer all of your questions concerning managing the finances of your church. DonSpence has been both the treasurer and the finance chairman of this local church and has been training others in financial management for over 40 years. Don will cover all facets of church finances while giving participants ample time to ask their unique questions.
Areas that will be covered include:
1. Church Audits
2. Church Budgets
3. Reporting Church Finances to the Congregation
4. Managing the Church’s Taxes
5. Clergy Taxes
6. Any other topic of interest concerning your church’s finances.
“How to be a Welcoming Congregation”
Leader – Missi Koenig – Missi has been a member of St. Mark’s UMC in Carmel for 18 years and a staff member as Welcome and Assimilation Coordinator since November of 2014. She is passionate about the ministry of hospitality and building community so that all feel the love and grace of Jesus Christ. I have been married to Aaron Koenig for 20 years and we live in Carmel, IN with our three children Anna (17), Emma (15), and Josh (10).
Being a welcoming congregation involves participation and prayer from the greeter to the pastor and everyone in between. It is truly a ministry of the entire church family. We will discuss how to welcome guests on Sundays and beyond, as well as how to build a community for those who are new to your congregation.
