Prayer Resources

Rather than waiting in angst for the ruling by the Judicial Council, Bishop Julius C. Trimble has invited us to consider a “More Excellent Way.” From Tuesday, April 25, to Friday, April 28, the Bishop is encouraging United Methodists and our neighbors across the country to join him in daily prayers at 7:30 each morning. Prayers are encouraged for the proceedings of the Judicial Council, the ongoing work of the Commission on a Way Forward, the missional engagement of our United Methodist Churches of Indiana, as well as each of our churches in every corner of the world.

Prayers are crafted by Darlene Neckers, Indiana Conference Prayer Coordinator.

Daily prayers are posted below.

Day 1: God, help us to worship You, the Creator, and not the things You have made. Help us to believe only what is truth. (Romans 1:25)

Day 2: Abba, thank You for the kindness of the gift of Your Son, who died for us, giving us right standing with You and eternal life. Thank You that because of the gift of Your Son, we live in triumph over sin and death, not because of ourselves, but because of You and Your gift of righteousness. (Romans 5:15-21)

Day 3: Praise You Lord, that the power of Your life-giving Spirit has freed us through Christ Jesus from the power of sin that leads to death. (Romans 8:2)

Day 4: Lord, Your Word tells us that faith comes by hearing the message of the good news about Christ. Stir in us a love for reading Your Word so that we will have more and more faith. (Romans 10:17)

Day 5: Help us to remember, Lord, that it is Christ Jesus who makes us acceptable to You. He made us pure and holy and purchased our freedom when He died for our sin. Wow! Thank you Jesus! (1 Corinthians 1:30)

Day 6: Lord, You purchased us at a costly price- the death of Your Son. Because of the price You paid to free us, help us not to become enslaved by the world and its traps. (1 Corinthians 7:23)

Day 7: Jehovah, remind us daily that it isn’t our knowledge but our love that You want. Help us to love You more and more. (1 Corinthians 8:1-3)

Day 8: Lord, we know from Your Word that our sinful nature loves to do evil. Through Your life-giving Holy Spirit, give us desires that are opposite of our sinful nature. (Galatians 5:16-17)

Day 9: Lord God, You have put all things under the authority of Christ. Keep us in that authority and fill us daily with Your Presence. (Ephesians 1:22-23)

Day 10: Holy One of Israel, help us never to put our confidence in human effort, but instead let You be all that we are confident about. When we boast, let our boasting be only about what Jesus has done for us. (Philippians 3:3)

Day 11: Oh Beautiful One, we praise You for giving us Your Son Jesus as our visible image of You. Thank You that His shed blood on the cross has made peace for us. (Colossians 1:15-20)

Day 12: Lord, we live in a time of chaos and confusion. Help us to think clearly, protected by the body armor of faith and love, and wearing as our helmet the confidence of our salvation. (1 Thessalonians 5:8)

Day 13: Holy God, scripture tells us that Your Holy Word teaches us what is true and makes us realize what is wrong in our lives. Use Your scripture, Your very words, to teach us, to prepare us, and to fully equip us for every good thing You want to do. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

Day 14: Our Maker, scripture tells us that the Word of God is living and full of power, sharper than any two-edged sword. Use Your Word to circumcise our hearts and make us fully devoted to You. (Hebrews 4:12, Deuteronomy 30:6)

Day 15: Oh Gracious Creator, I am so grateful to You that I have a High Priest, Jesus, who understands my weaknesses because He too faced all of the same temptations I do, yet He did not sin. I can go boldly to Your throne and receive Your mercy and find grace to help me when I need it. How I praise Your name! (Hebrews 4:14-16)

Day 16: Lord, I love Your Word, especially when I read it and remember that the suffering of Jesus taught Him obedience. That obedience qualified Him as a perfect High Priest, and He became the source of eternal salvation for all those who obey Him. This knowledge is too much for me to comprehend! You are an amazing God! (Hebrews 5:8-9)

Day 17: Dear God of unfailing love, when I think of how Jesus, our High Priest, lives forever to plead with You on my behalf, I am in awe of You and Your love for me! Thank You for Your Son. (Hebrews 7:24-25)

Day 18: Lord, Your Word is full of promises that I want to read over and over again. When I read that Jesus entered that great, perfect sanctuary in heaven with His own blood by offering himself as a perfect sacrifice I am filled with love and awe. My words can never compare to Yours. Thank You for Your words of love and promise. (Hebrews 9:11-14)

Day 19: Lord God of all, thank you that my enemies are humbled as a footstool under the feet of Jesus, whose offering of His own body has made me holy. I can’t believe Your Son would do that for me! Thank you for loving me that much. (Hebrews 10:13-14)

Day 20: Lord, You are the greatest promise keeper of all! Help me to hold tightly to the hope I find in You. I know I can come to You with complete confidence because You keep your promises. (Hebrews 10:21-23)

Day 21: Precious Lord, it says in the scripture that we must test spirits to see if they have come from You. Give us godly wisdom and understanding to know false prophets, those who deny that Jesus became a human being. Lord, we want to have the spirit of truth in us. Help us to be people of light. (1 John 4:1-6, Ephesians 1:17-18)

Day 22: Gracious One, when I read in scripture that I was dead because of my sin, but You gave me life by raising Christ from the dead, I am overwhelmed with love and joy! Your plans for me give me hope because I know that because of You I can live forever! (Ephesians 2:4-5)

Day 23: Oh Lord, please help me. I don’t want anything to be greater in my heart than You. Help me to love You with all of my heart, soul, and strength. (1 John 5:21, Deuteronomy 6:5)

Day 24: Yahweh, I don’t want to wander away from You or Your truth. Guide my life so that I will have fellowship with You. Protect my heart and mind from false teaching and lies of the enemy. (2 John 7-9)

Day 25: Give me courage and boldness, Lord, to defend the truth of the Good News. How I praise You for being an unchanging God! (Jude 3, James 1:17, Hebrews 13:8)

Day 26: Lord God, I have tasted of You and You are good. Your word is sweeter than honey. Give me a hunger each day to taste of Your sweetness from the Bible. (Psalm 34:8, 119:103)

Day 27: Holy One, help me to strip off the weight of sin that holds me down and hinders my progress in my relationship with You. Keep my eyes fixed on Jesus. Remind me daily that He was willing to die a shameful death on the cross and endure suffering for me. Let those thoughts keep me from becoming weary and giving up as I think of the joy that will one day be mine! (Hebrews 12:1-3)

Day 28: Abba, when the enemy would trick me into thinking that I am not Your choice possession, firmly plant in my heart Your words from scripture that You will never leave me nor forsake me, that You love me with an everlasting love. You never change and Your love for me is unfailing. Such thoughts are too great for my heart to comprehend! (James 1:13-18; Hebrews 13:5; Jeremiah 31:3)

Day 29: Great and Mighty God, when the enemy whispers to me that You have caused my pain or suffering, help me to remember that scripture tells me You are the same yesterday, today, and forever. Your plans for me are for good and not for disaster, to give me a future and a hope. You are not the author of pain, for You came to bring life in all its fullness. I trust in You and give You my future. (Hebrews 13:8; Jeremiah 29:11; John 10:10)

Day 30: Adonai, help me to live as Christ did. If I say I love You I must show You by obeying Your word. I belong to You and I want to show that to You and others by the way I live. (1 John 2:3-6)

Day 31: Faithful God, I need You to keep me from sin. There is no sin in You so I want to live in You. I walk in confidence that Your life is in me. I praise You for accepting me into Your family and putting Your life in me! (1 John 3:7-10)

Corporate Prayer for your Community

Praying together regularly for your community will take you and your church to the next level of intercession. If you do not have a prayer coordinator, ask God to call someone into that position. Having a person responsible for organizing times of corporate prayer will insure that they actually happen. That person can gather resources and intercessors for prayer and train them in prayer for your city, town, village or rural area.

Here are more helpful suggestions:

  1. Set a time to gather for prayer and stick to it.
  2. Start with praise and worship – songs, scriptures and personal praises.
  3. Focus on different topics each meeting.
  4. Vary your approach – pray in pairs one meeting, prayerwalk one meeting (see below for Waymakers resources), pray as a group another time.
  5. Don’t let the meeting turn into a discussion what you should pray about -just do it!
  6. Stay on target. Don’t let your meeting turn into praying for members of your congregation who need a touch from God. This prayer meeting is for your community and seeking God’s will for your church’s ministry in the community. If you desire, offer to stay after the meeting and pray for individual needs.
  7. Don’t be discouraged if only a few show up for corporate prayer. The faith of only two or three can move mountains in God’s kingdom.

Let’s look at some ways to pray for your community and discern your call to outreach as a church.

1. Declare scripture over your community aloud

  • Isaiah 43:5-7
  • 1 Chronicles 16:23-24
  • Psalms -just about all of them
  • John 4:23
  • Isaiah 54:14
  • You get the idea. Pray scripture.

2. Speak blessing over your neighbors, friends and strangers in your community. (Taken from Light-Houses of Prayer brochure, Houses of Prayer Everywhere.)

  • Body – health, protection, strength
  • Labor – work, income, security
  • Emotional – joy, peace, hope
  • Social – love, marriage, family, friends
  • Spiritual – salvation, faith, grace

3. Using printed resources for your prayer group is an easy and effective way to pray in agreement with one another. It also eases the fear of praying aloud in a small group. Before long, you will find yourselves tailoring the prayers to your community’s needs, adding specifics. Here are some suppliers that have proved helpful:

Our Father in Heaven

Matthew 6:9-13

In just 68 English words, Jesus modeled for His disciples a well balanced way to pray. From relationship, to worship, to concern for God’s kingdom, to petition for daily needs, to forgiveness, to spiritual warfare, to glorious praise – Jesus modeled every kind of prayer. Note that seven times “us, we, our” are used in five short verses. There is power in agreement in the family of God.

Our Father in heaven.

2 Immediately I was in the Spirit; and behold, a throne set in heaven, and One sat on the throne. 3 And He who sat there was like a jasper and a sardius stone in appearance; and there was a rainbow around the throne, in appearance like an emerald. 6 Before the throne there was a sea of glass, like crystal. And in the midst of the throne, and around the throne, were four living creatures full of eyes in front and in back. 8 The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying: “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!” 9 Whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, who lives forever and ever, 10 the twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne and worship Him who lives forever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying: 11 “You are worthy, O Lord, To receive glory and honor and power; For You created all things, And by Your will they exist and were created.” – Rev. 4:2-3, 6, 8-11

Thank Him that you can call Him Father because your relationship with Him was established when you received Jesus as your Savior and Lord. God is your Father. You are His beloved child.

Psalm 149:4; Psalm 103:13

Hallowed be your name.

4 Sing to God, sing praises to His name; Extol Him who rides on the clouds, By His name Yah, And rejoice before Him. – Psalm 68:4

Adore your Father with praise for who He is. Meditate on His names. Worship Him as your Lord, your Holy Spirit, your Holiness, your Righteousness, your Peace, your Healer, your Provider, your Victory, your Shepherd, and much more. Thank Him for meeting your needs.

Psalm 138:2; Psalm 145:5-6; Proverbs 18:10

Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

19 And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” – Matthew 16:19

Ask Him His will in prayer. Pray how He tells you, in submission to His heart and His purposes. Ask the Lord to rule in your life, your family, church, school, nation, and the world.

Psalm 66:20; Jude 20; 1 John 5:19-20

Give us this day our daily bread.

25 “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. – Matthew 6:25, 32b-34

Ask God to meet all your physical, material, personal, and immediate needs this day. Ask Him to provide today’s needs for others.

Deuteronomy 8:3

Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who have trespassed against us.

14 “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. – Matthew 6:14-15

Present to God a humble heart. Confess your sins to God and ask His forgiveness. Ask Him to forgive those who have sinned against you and be sure that you have forgiven them.

Psalm 69:5-6; Matthew 7:1-2

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints – Ephesians 6:10-11,14-18b

Acknowledge the weakness of your flesh and your need to depend on God as you stand firm in spiritual warfare. Dress yourself in the spiritual armor from the head down. “I take the helmet of salvation. Jesus, by Your death on the cross You are my Savior, Redeemer, and Deliverer. Thank You that I have the mind of Christ. I put on the breastplate of righteousness. Jesus, search my heart. I choose to turn form all sin. Your blood cleanses me and makes me right with God. I put on the belt of truth. I will hold to Your word, which is my truth. I will not believe the enemy’s lies. I put on the sandals of peace. Jesus, I am not ashamed of the gospel of peace. I have pursued peace and forgiven everybody, and I choose today to be at peace with everyone I encounter. I take up the shield of faith. Jesus, You are all the faith I need for victory. The fiery darts of the wicked one are extinguished. I take up the sword of the Spirit. Jesus, You are the Word of God who lives in me. Fill my heart and my mouth today with Your Word, my offensive weapon against the enemy. In Your name, I pray a hedge of protection around my family and me by Your blood and the power of the holy Spirit. I love and trust You entirely. Fill me with Your Spirit.”

Psalm 140:7; Isaiah 51:6; 2 Cor. 10:5; Colossians 3:2; Isaiah 59:15b-17; Proverbs 8:20; Psalm 51:6; John 8:31-32; John 14:6; 2 Timothy 2:15; Psalm 18:33; Psalm 66:8-9; Isaiah 26:3; James 4:7-8; Hebrews 11:1; Hebrews 11:6; Proverbs 30:5; Psalm 149:6; Hebrews 4:12; John 1:1-4; John 1:14

For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.

39 Therefore know this day, and consider it in your heart, that the Lord Himself is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other. 40 You shall therefore keep His statutes and His commandments which I command you today, that it may go well with you and with your children after you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which the Lord your God is giving you for all time.”– Deuteronomy 4:39-40

Worship Him and commit these prayers to His sovereignty. Praise Him that He reigns as Lord of all. Praise Him for His awesome, abundant power on your behalf. Praise Him that glory will be reflected through your life today as a bold witness for Jesus. Amen
