General Conference Volunteer Feature: Ezechiel Habwawihe

In January, Rev. Ezechiel Habwawihe, pastor at Morgantown UMC, received an unexpected email from Donald Reasoner, inquiring about his interest in interpreting for the 2020 Postponed General Conference. “I have never worked with Reasoner before, nor have I ever expressed a willingness to help,” Rev. Ezechiel explained. “So, I guess I was suggested by a colleague or that it was a supernatural connection.”

Throughout the week, Rev. Ezechiel translated English to French, Swahili, and Kirundi for individuals and large groups of people. He was assigned to the Judicial Administration Committee, where moments of frustration arose due to some delegates not receiving translated documents promptly or failing to utilize the microphone when speaking.

However, Rev. Ezechiel explained, “Our interpretation services quickly filled the gap and allowed non-English speaking delegates to engage and contribute constructively like everyone else effectively.” Thankfully, everyone involved graciously allowed the interpreters plenty of time to translate before proceeding with the next sentence.

As Rev. Ezechiel reflected on his first experience interpreting for the General Conference, he shared, “I am honored and privileged to serve in a time when our beloved Church makes crucial decisions that will determine the future of our denomination. It is humbling, and I praise God for the gift of speaking many languages.”
