HILBERT J. BERGER of Lafayette, 93, retired Elder of the Indiana Conference and father of the Rev. Daniel J. Berger, recently retired Elder of the Indiana Conference, died Friday, Sept. 6, 2013. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept 13, at Covington McCombs & Sons Funeral Home, 8325 Covington Road in Fort Wayne and one hour before the memorial service at the church. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14 at First Wayne Street United Methodist Church, 300 E. Wayne Street in Fort Wayne, with the Revs. Greg Enstom and Justin K. Fisher officiating. Survivors include: by his son, the Rev. Daniel (Kelly) Berger of Lafayette; daughter, Rebecca (Terry) Zarnik of LaBelle, Fla.; four grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and brother Lowell Berger of North Fort Myers, Fla. Berger served churches in Indiana at Waterloo St. Paul, Avilla Calvary, Elkhart Dunlap, Hammond First EUB, West Lafayette St. Andrew and Fort Wayne Aldersgate. He also served from 1967-1972 as Assistant General Secretary of the General Board of the Laity in Evanston, Ill. and headed the Section of Christian Stewardship for The United Methodist Church.
