HERBERT WINSTON BYRNE of Wilmore, Ky., retired Elder of the Indiana Conference and professor of Christian Education (1969-1989) emeritus at Asbury Theological Seminary, died Friday, Aug. 5, 2011, in Lexington. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 16 in Clark Chapel of the Wilmore UMC, 209 East Main Street in Wilmore. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. in the chapel an hour before the service. Survivors include: a daughter, Betty Manion; his wife, Ellen; son, Burt, who predeceased him. Dr. Byrne”s ministry covered more than 40 years as pastor, evangelist, teacher and administrator. He served Indiana churches at Loxley and Millville and at Western Evangelical Seminary, Fort Wayne Bible College and Huntington College prior to becoming chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religion at Asbury College, where he served until 1967 when he accepted a call to become chair of the Department of Christian Education at Asbury Theological Seminary.
