Helping After Hurricane Harvey

The Monticello United Methodist Church is a collection point for items needed for the relief effort following Hurricane Harvey.

UMCOR, United Methodist Committee On Relief, is asking for two types of items.  First they need Flood Buckets.  A flood bucket is a 5 gallon bucket with a resealable lid.  The contents inside the bucket are a 50 oz bottle of liquid laundry detergent, a 12 to 16 oz bottle of liquid cleaner that can be mixed with water, a 16-28 oz bottle of dish soap, 50 clothespins, 100 foot clothesline, 7 sponges, 24 roll heavy-duty trash bags 33 to 45 gallon size, 18 reusable cleaning wipes, 1 can air freshener, one 6-14 oz insect-repellant spray, 2 pairs of kitchen dishwashing gloves, 1 pair work gloves, 5 scouring pads, 1 scrub brush, 5 dust masks.

The relief effort is also in need of Hygiene Kits.  A hygiene kit includes 1 hand towel, 1 washcloth, 1 toothbrush, 6 adhesive bandages, 1 bath-size soap, 1 comb, and 1 metal nail file or nail clippers.

Items needed to assemble the flood buckets and hygiene kits may be dropped off at the Monticello United Methodist Church, located at 200 South Main Street in Monticello.  Items will be accepted during normal business hours through Friday, September 8.  The collection center will also be open on Friday, September 1  from 3-6 PM and on Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 PM.  Monetary donations are also being accepted to purchase items needed to assemble the kits.    For more information, contact the Monticello United Methodist Church at 574-583-5545.

NW DISTRICT DISASTER RESPONSE TEAM

Our Indiana Conference is working to launch a Disaster Recovery Plan for our state. Responding to a disaster is both compassionate and missional. Our Conference is connected with outside agencies like UMCOR (the United Methodist Committee on Relief) and others to provide relief in those first days after a disaster but also long term recovery afterwards.

As part of this program, each district has a Disaster Response Coordinator. Terry Brammer is honored to serve as the DDRC for the Northwest District. Over the next few months he will be building a team to help with this mission in our district and determining what assets we have available to respond to disasters. In the meantime, if you have any questions, comments, or if your community experiences a disaster, here is his contact information.
