The current Indiana Conference budget for our retiree health insurance subsidy is partially under-written by income from funds held within the United Methodist Foundation of Indiana. What was originally created generations ago as “The Worn-Out Preachers Fund” continues to care for retired clergy by providing in excess of $200,000 per year. We would not be able to care for our retired clergy in the manner we do without this resource.
The Indiana Conference Board of Pensions and Health Insurance administers grants to retired clergy, spouses, and families demonstrating the greatest need. The Compassion Fund assists about ten households per year. Recipients of these grants are usually those with the greatest number of years of pre-1982 service, as well as those experiencing extra-ordinary circumstances.
Grants are made annually, administered monthly, and provided confidentially. Those who wish to apply for a grant are to contact Linda Eskew (firstname.lastname@example.org), our Insurance Benefits Assistant, at the Conference Center (317-924-1321).
Both of these resources, the account held and administered by the United Methodist Foundation of Indiana and The Compassion Fund, exist because of the wise and caring actions of the Indiana Conference’s predecessor conferences.
