Africa University Choir performing across Indiana in concert

The Africa University Choir, soon touring the United States, will be performing concerts across Indiana. The following concerts are free and open to the public. Come enjoy.

  • Friday, June 7 at Indiana Annual Conference Session in the Indiana Convention Center, 100 S. Capitol Avenue at Georgia Street in downtown Indiana at 7 p.m. EDT.
  • Sunday, June 9 at St. Luke’s UMC, 100 West 86th Street, Indianapolis during the three morning worship services at 8:15, 9:30 and 11 a.m. EDT;
  • Sunday, June 9 at First UMC, 1700 W State Street in West Lafayette at 7 p.m. EDT;
  • Monday, June 10 at Methodist Temple UMC, 2109 Lincoln Avenue in Evansville at 7 p.m. CDT;
  • Tuesday, June 11 at Wesley UMC, 1201 Locust Street in Jeffersonville at 7 p.m. EDT;
  • Wednesday, June 12 at First UMC, 219 East 4th Street in Bloomington at 7 p.m. EDT; and
  • Thursday, June 13 at St. Mark’s UMC, 4780 East 126th Street in Carmel at 7 p.m. EDT.

The touring choir features students from various African countries, all with a passion for music ministry. Its repertoire is drawn from the African praise and worship tradition and features songs in more than 18 languages, including English, French, Portuguese, Swahili (East and Central Africa); Shona and Ndebele (Zimbabwe); Zulu (South Africa); and Lingala (Democratic Republic of Congo). These songs speak of abiding faith in the face of trials and celebrate the fullness of God’s love. They inspire movement and are often joyful expressions of gratitude and hope in Almighty God.

The director of the Africa University Choir, Mr. Tendekai Kuture, is a distinguished Zimbabwean choral conductor. He is head of the Department of Music in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Africa University.

No workshop, meal reservations will be made during the session

If you haven’t ordered workshop or meal reservations by now, you are too late to do so now. Workshops are full, outside of the Friday morning workshop with Mark Beeson in the Worship Center (Hall K). No meal tickets will be sold during the annual conference session. If conference members and guests would like to attend one of these meals, but have not done so yet, they will need to seek out tickets on their own or watch for available tickets on Facebook.com or Twitter @inumconference #inac13.

Displays, vendors and coffee are open Thursday, Friday and Saturday

A large display, vendors and coffee area with more than 50 booths will be open Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Friday from 7 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon;

Lucille Raines Residence Tour to precede conference session on Thursday morning, June 6

Lucille Raines HomeIf you plan to arrive in downtown Indianapolis on Wednesday night or Thursday morning, plan also to take a free tour of the Lucille Raines Residence at 947 N. Pennsylvania Street. No reservations are necessary. Free shuttles will run from the north side of the Convention Center at the Maryland Street entrance beginning Thursday morning at 9 a.m. and ending at 11 a.m. Lucille Raines Residence is a facility owned and operated by the United Methodist Women of Indiana. The men and women residents are actively engaged in rebuilding their lives from substance abuse. They all share in learning to function independently and as whole people in life. Beeson to lead ‘The 5 Essentials of TEAM’ during Friday morning workshops

BeesonThe Rev. Mark Beeson of Granger Community UMC will be leading “The 5 Essentials of TEAM” workshop on Friday morning from 10:15 a.m. to noon in the Worship Center (Hall K) along Capitol Hallway. This workshop is the only workshop open to members and guests who have not yet registered for a workshop. All other workshops are now closed. In this workshop, the five vital ingredients are key to the success of each team in your church. By the time this workshop ends, participants will know exactly why people join teams, and why people leave teams. Whether your mission is to launch another campus, build a student ministry, develop a pre-school ministry or reach your area for Christ, your ability to build the team to get the job done is essential.

Join the Young Adult Ministries Team at Hard Rock Café at 9:30 p.m. Friday, June 7 for great fellowship and music. Also, get a sneak peek at the Lion and Lamb Festival, coming to Indiana, Labor Day weekend 2013. Food is on your own. Music will feature last year’s Friday night worship leader, Amy Cox. Benefits and enrollment opportunity

Linda Eskew and Sherry Austin will be available to answer benefits and enrollment questions during the Annual Conference Session next week in Room 233 on the second floor. This is the same room as the Health Screenings. One of them will be available Thursday, June 6, from 1 to 4 p.m., Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to noon. We are encouraging all those that are new participants to stop by and check on their enrollments. All forms can be turned in at this time. Enrollment forms for dependent coverage changes as well as much more information will be available.

Credit Union to gather for annual meeting, lunch during annual conference session, Thursday noon

Credit UnionINDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana United Methodist Federal Credit Union (www.iumfcu.org) will hold its annual meeting Thursday, June 6 at noon at the RAM Restaurant, 40 S. Illinois Street in downtown Indianapolis, one block east of the Indiana Convention Center Georgia Street entrance (www.theram.com). The meeting usually lasts from 60 to 90 minutes. IUMFCU chose this meeting time for the convenience of those attending annual conference. Anyone who is a member or interested in being a member of the Credit Union is invited to the IUMFCU Annual Meeting. The only cost the meal, which will be selected from the restaurant’s menu. Reservations need to be called in to Marla Geiger at 765-864-9000. The IUMFCU is located at 4047 S. Webster Street in Kokomo.

Indiana Scouting chapter to meet during annual conference, June 7 at 7 a.m.

INDIANAPOLIS – The Pathfinder Chapter of the National Association of United Methodist Scouters will have its annual meeting at 7 a.m. Friday, June 7 at Shapiro’s Deli, 808 S. Meridian Street in downtown Indianapolis. (From Convention Center at Georgia Street, walk two blocks east and six blocks south on Meridian.) All members of NAUMS and interested friends are invited to join us for breakfast. Those attending will order from the menu. The chapter will be presenting the latest information about the Bible Project, the mission trip to Tenke, DR Congo and about some new recognitions NAUMS has launched, one of them named after our late chapter president, Karen Heim-Baugh. United Methodist Women and United Methodist Men have been asked to be greeters during the Indiana Annual Conference Session being held June 6-8 at the Indiana Convention Center in downtown Indianapolis, especially for Saturday morning. UMW are greeting inside the Convention Center and the UMM are greeting outside along the sidewalks in front of the Convention Center. UMW news and reminders in preparation for the annual conference session

Members of the United Methodist Women are asked to wear red Friday, June 7 at the Annual Conference Session, as a statement of solidarity in mission committed to women, children and youth through faith, hope and love in action.

Also, please remember to bring individually wrapped healthy snacks for the conference youth mission event in July. Approximately 500 youth from around the state will be in mission to Indianapolis kids, including leading Vacation Bible to about 100 kids daily in downtown area parks. The following items will be collected at the UMW of IN display during Annual Conference:
