WhiteheadINDIANAPOLIS – Indiana Bishop Mike Coyner announces today, Jan. 9, the appointment of the Rev. Larry K. Whitehead as the new North District Superintendent effective July 1, 2013. Whitehead currently serves as lead pastor of First United Methodist Church at Mishawaka, Ind.

Upon this announcement, Coyner said, “Larry brings a wealth of helpful experience to the position of North District Superintendent, including his first career in hospital administration, his pastoral service to several sizes of churches including two significant churches in the North District, his support for the camping ministries of the Conference, especially for Epworth Forest which is within the bounds of the North District, and his prior service on the Conference Council on Finance and Administration. Larry was highly recommended to me by members of the current Cabinet as well as by pastors and lay leaders in the North District, so I am pleased that Larry has said yes to this new appointment.”

Before answering a call to ordained ministry, he served as Director of Rehabilitation Technology at Memorial Hospital in South Bend from 1983 to 1990.

Whitehead was ordained an Elder in 1996. He has served Indiana churches as an associate pastor of High Street UMC in Muncie (1994-1998) and pastor of First UMC in Hobart (1998-2005) as well as his current position since 2005.

In the Indiana Conference, he has been active on the Council of Finance and Administration, as Spiritual Director of Middle School Camp Adventure and a member of the board of directors at Bashor Children’s Home in Goshen, Ind.
