INDIANAPOLIS – Chief Brian Buchanan, leader of the Miami Nation, and Aaron Stevens, a Black Cherokee Indian, will be some of the featured speakers during the Indiana Conference Committee on Native American Ministries Native American Celebration.
Other participants include: the North Central Jurisdiction Committee on Native American Ministries and the United Methodist national Native American Comprehensive Plan.
The three-day event will be held the weekend of Nov. 2-4 at St. Luke’s and St. Andrew’s United Methodist churches and Circles of Life Ministries all in Indianapolis.
Friday evening, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of St. Luke’s UMC in Indianapolis, the award winning film “Our Spirits Don’t Speak English: Indian Boarding School” will be featured. Larry Zimmerman, professor of Anthropology at IUPUI and the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art will lead a discussion following the film.
Saturday, Nov. 3 at 2 p.m., Circles of Life Ministries will conduct a guided tour within the five wooded acres at 6125 Iona Road in Indianapolis
Sunday, Nov. 4 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Andrew’s UMC, 2560 Villa Avenue in Indianapolis, the morning worship service will feature state, regional and national United Methodist pastors sharing about American spirituality. The service also will feature native flute performances with native language prayers. Communion will be observed. This will be an opportunity to learn about the impoverished Indiana reservations and how ongoing support can be given by United Methodist congregations.
Sunday, Nov. 4 at 6 p.m. at St. Luke’s UMC, 100 W. 86th Street in Indianapolis Later @ St. Luke’s will feature state, regional and national United Methodist pastors sharing in a spiritual worship service featuring music and prayers in native languages by Chief Brian Buchanan, leader of the Miami Nation, and Aaron Stevens a Black Cherokee Indian. A meal with cultural foods will be served following this worship service in the church’s Fellowship Hall.
