It’s time for Hoosier United Methodists to engage in hammer theology. The Indiana Conference Disaster Response Team and Habitat for Humanity of Indiana needs volunteer workers for the week or just a day during the Raise the Roof over Southern Indiana Habitat for Humanity Blitz Build 2012 the week of October 8-13. Bishop Mike Coyer will be on hand to begin the United Methodist builds on Oct. 8 at the Henryville Habitat build site. Construction funded by Indiana United Methodist Disaster Response donations for two Habitat homes will be the focus of activity this week through the first part of December.
To register to specifically work on these homes during the Raise the Roof Over Southern Indiana Blitz Build 2012 week, visit www.habitatindiana.org, select volunteer and follow the “click here” for groups or individuals or go directly to the sign up page at https://habitatindiana.volunteermatrix.com. As of Friday, Sept. 7 only four of the 30 persons necessary for this week were registered.
When perspective volunteers arrive at the sign up page, they need to click on the Access Code button and then enter the code UMCOR. This will ensure that they are assigned to the United Methodist funded home sites. Through this procedure volunteers will be able to see the number of volunteers needed on each day of the Blitz Build week. Volunteers will receive a confirmation email immediately and a telephone call within 48 hours to discuss their and/or their teams’ abilities and interests. Please remember that all volunteers on construction sites must be 16 years or older.
To reduce confusion, the confirmation emailed message may state that volunteers need to make their own housing arrangements. Arrangements have been made for all United Methodist Blitz Build groups to have lodging and meals provided at the Country Lake Christian Retreat Center north of Henryville. Please do not contact Country Lake directly. The Habitat coordinator will confirm with registered volunteers the number of nights they need housing and the number of people coming in the group. The room and board cost for the week is $75 per person.
To maintain this reduced cost, the conference disaster response team hopes that each group will bring one volunteer support person for each ten site-team members. The volunteer support people will assist staff in kitchen, housekeeping and grounds duties. Support volunteers will have the opportunity to visit the construction site/s, participate in morning and evening devotions with their team and will be housed with their team. This is a great opportunity to include team members that do not have the inclination or skill to work on the construction site.
Volunteers needed now through Dec. 14
Additionally, Habitat for Humanity of Indiana is in need of volunteers beginning Sept. 15 through Dec. 14. The goal is to have nearly 30 families in new homes by Christmas. This will take thousands of hours of construction, finish work, painting and cleaning effort. While there is not a specific assignment option for UMCOR during these dates (don’t do the ACCESS CODE step), volunteers are encouraged to follow the above procedures for site assignments on the dates you or your team may be available. You will need to confirm with the Habitat Coordinator the number of volunteers and nights that housing is needed.
