NASHVILLE, Tenn. – At its organizational meeting July 11, in Nashville, the General Council on Finance and Administration (GCFA) elected Indiana Bishop Mike Coyner to serve as the President of the Board of Directors of GCFA for the 2012-2016 quadrennium.

As President of the Board of Directors, Coyner will preside over board meetings and also represent GCFA on the denomination’s Connectional Table.

Upon his election, Coyner said, “Having served on GCFA the past four years, I am well aware of the importance of this voluntary position as President of the Board of Directors for GCFA. In the upcoming quadrennium our denomination faces many budgetary and leadership issues which I hope that GCFA can help to address. Among these issues are:

Developing a process by which all annual conferences, including the Central Conferences, contribute a fair share to the general church budget;

Working with the agencies and Connectional Table to develop a narrative budget which focuses upon the mission and Call to Action of our denomination – especially emphasizing Vital Congregations;

Strengthening our commitment to tithing and other positive stewardship practices; and

Focusing our funding at the appropriate levels of effectiveness in our whole church in order to be better stewards of our resources.

“I look forward to working with the other directors and with the staff of GCFA, as well as with the Council of Bishops, Connectional Table and other general agencies in a collaborative model of leadership for our UMC. General Secretary Moses Kumar and I have already begun plans for a series of ‘listening sessions’ in order to hear the concerns and ideas of our various constituencies through the UMC.”
