BATTLE GROUND, Ind. – The Battle Ground United Methodist Church north of Lafayette in the Northwest District opened a new child care ministry Feb. 6. The ministry is located in the former parsonage as the church’s Child Care Ministry Center located at 205 Tipton Street in Battle Ground. The center needed some remodeling to be compliant with the State of Indiana Family Social Services and the Fire Marshal.
This new ministry will care for up to 20 children, infant through 10-years of age, it is open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Sherry Evans, administrator of the new center, told Together, “We had one fundraiser. Everyone from the church brought in their treasures for a garage sale at the ministry site. God was truly in the garage that weekend, because we raised $800. Along with that (garage sale) came a few nice monetary gifts, so we started the ministry with $4,000.”
Evans continued, “It seems like a good start and we have been diligent about watching our spending, but when a state approved baby crib cost $300, you don’t get far on that budget! We hope to find some grant monies to purchase three more cribs.”
According to Evans, the Center’s childcare providers are first required to have a dedication to serving your family, the community and the world through love and faith in Jesus Christ” and strive to prepare children for kindergarten. Childcare providers are required to have criminal background checks, drug testing, TB test and CPR training.
Evans says the Child Care Ministry Center provides transportation to the local elementary school. Full-time, part-time and hourly positions are available.
“We are ready for God to bless us with 20 kids,” she said. “Our future plans include inviting each family to Vacation Bible School and including the children from the ministry. We are currently taking enrollment for our Christ-centered preschool to be open in fall 2012.”
