The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), United Methodist Volunteers in Mission (UMVIM), and the Methodist Church of Haiti (EMH-Eglise Methodiste d’Haiti) are ready to accept volunteers to rebuild Haiti.
The EMH has established a priority list of projects that need attention around the country and teams are asked to register with Susan Meister (firstname.lastname@example.org) for a specific time period. She will schedule the team and assign the team to a particular project according to the priority list.
Individual volunteers interested in serving in Haiti for earthquake recovery need to register through Mission Volunteers, if they have not already done so. Visit www.inumc.org/vimforms.
Once registered, up to date information will come directly to volunteers.
Bonnie Albert, Indiana Conference UMVIM Coordinator, also will receive volunteer data and connect volunteers with forming teams or teams forming with potential volunteers. Volunteers are encouraged to attend UMVIM Training events and/or Disaster Early Response Training. Indiana Conference online publications will inform volunteers when events are being planned at various times and places throughout the state.
If traveling with The United Methodist Church, all teams must travel to Haiti with someone who has Haitian mission experience. A list of people who have experience in Haiti is available and continues to grow. These volunteers have indicated a willingness to serve on teams to facilitate going into Haiti and coming out as well be involved in the orientation sessions for all team members prior to going. All experienced Haitian mission team leaders indicate the preparation work done before going is critical to the success of the overall mission experience. As time goes on, more and more people will be able to fill this role. Teams need to include, as part of their budget, the costs for including such a person on their team.
Estimates for the cost of a 10-day mission trip to Haiti are about $2,000 per person. This amount will cover air and ground transportation, lodging, food, water, translator, exit tax, tips, insurance, resource person, and project costs ($350). Project costs for each team of 10 members is $3,500 and needs to be sent to Susan Meister six weeks prior to leaving.
