The Brightwood Community Center Literacy Center Open House is scheduled for Wednesday, March 24. Brightwood is located at 2410 N. Station Street, one block west of Sherman Drive, in a brick church with a green steeple. Enter from the back of the building.
Bishop Mike Coyner plans to participate in this celebration. The National Council on Educating Black Children’s Executive Director, Diana Daniels, also plans to be present. NCEBC sponsors the Literacy Center at Brightwood Community Center.
Volunteers from Carmel St. Mark’s in Castleton, Horizons of Faith in Broad Ripple and Lawrence United Methodist run the program on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings during the school year. The new program began on Jan. 12 and will be the primary focus of the center’s summer camp this year.
The tentative schedule for the open house includes:
- 5:00 p.m. – Literacy Center with children arriving and meal prepared for them. (normal schedule for the kids)
- 5:30 p.m.– Literacy Center with children in their learning centers.
- 5:45 p.m. – Adults and parents arrive and will be able to listen in on the learning centers.
- 6:30 p.m. – Children will join the celebration with refreshments.
