On the road to Muncie

Next Wednesday, preliminary meetings of the new Indiana Annual Conference in Muncie will begin. The first session of Annual Conference will begin on Thursday morning, June 25 at 9 a.m. in Emens Auditorium on the campus of Ball State University. Here are updates especially about the Day of Mission and Outreach on Saturday, June 27.

Here is information and tips about the Saturday Mission and Outreach to Muncie.

Clothing: Each participant in the Saturday afternoon outreach event will be given a red Rethink Church T-shirt. That is the first 1,000 to grab one. The T-shirts will be distributed Friday afternoon and Saturday morning in the lobby of Emens Auditorium. First come, first serve.
If you are expecting to do painting or other work please bring along an extra shirt to change into if desired.
Please bring raingear as the event will still happen in the rain. Comfortable shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, water bottle will be needed for the clean-up, prayer walking and other outdoor projects.

Transportation: Participants will leave Emens Auditorium by each new district. Transportation is being organized to each site and maps will be available for those who wish to drive to the sites.
Maps and directions are available on the conference Web site here. Each address is highlighted in color. Place the cursor on the highlight and click to receive a direction map from Emens to each district gathering site. Planners ask that anyone who is willing to drive his or her own vehicle to the district site to do so. They need help in getting people to the various locations for each of the projects. Transpiration will be available to return people to Emens Auditorium at the end of the afternoon.

Complimentary box-lunch meals will be served at the district meeting locations. (Registration was required for the afternoon to reserve a box lunch. If you did not make this reservation for the day, check with the registration table to see if there are meals available.) If you have questions about the afternoon, please e-mail the Team Leader of your new district or Karen Powell at kkpowelltims@gmail.com.

Residents in Muncie are very excited about this Day of Outreach. The Saturday evening worship will be a celebration of the opportunities God has given us to make a difference in this city and to share the love of Christ with many people. The Saturday Celebration of Worship, like all worship services and plenary sessions in Emens Auditorium, are open to the public. The Saturday service begins at 7 p.m.

Radio Station WLBC-FM (104.1) will be doing live broadcasts from the Covenant Partners Ministries mission site from 2 to 4 p.m. WLBC also will air United Methodist promotion spots during the week.

Billboards: Five RETHINK CHURCH billboards are up in Muncie as an extension to the community that we are in town next week. Three of the boards are on highway 332. One is across the street from the Hampton Inn.

Star Press coverage: The Muncie Star Press will have a story about our annual conference in the Saturday, June 20 issue of the paper. On Friday, June 26, there will be a full-page color ad in The Star Press announcing our RETHINK CHURCH theme and highlighting Saturday’s mission and outreach.

Please be in prayer for the whole conference and for this day of outreach.

An important part of each Annual Conference is the displays of mission and ministries in Indiana. The displays will be both in Emens Auditorium and in Park Hall, a short walk to the northeast behind Emens. On the main lobby of Emens will be displays by Clarian Health and United Methodist General Church agencies. On the lower level are clergy spouse refresher, EO and Parish Nursing. Cokesbury will be in the upper level lobby. Olan Mills pictures and health screening will take place on the lower level.

Park Hall, (building 56 on the Ball State map) east of the parking lot, will include displays of vendors, ministry support, conference groups, global ministries and mission, finance, higher education, residential-life communities and other groups. Display hours are Thursday and Friday from 11 to 7 and Saturday from 9 to 5. A displays flyer is available here.

It’s spring and the season of road construction statewide. Here’s what you will encounter in Muncie on the way to Annual Conference. Road construction and repaving are occurring on highway 332 also know as McGalliard Road. Currently there is one-lane traffic in each direction from just north of the football stadium out almost to Wal-Mart (Tillotson to Morrison Road). The word is that work will extend out west another mile. So people entering Muncie for Annual Conference may want to consider one of two alternate routes:

  1. State Road 28 to Wheeling Ave. and then south on Wheeling.
  2. State Road 32 to Tillotson Ave. and then north on Tillotson.

For other road construction statewide, visit www.in.gov/indot/2310.htm.

Marsha Coyner and June Owen will host a special gathering of clergy spouses during this year’s Indiana Annual Conference for a special gathering at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 25 (during the Clergy Executive Session). Information will be shared about Muncie, Annual Conference, this year’s Spouse Refresher, and more. Clergy spouses, please come and share as we enjoy refreshments, an opportunity to reunite with old friends and meet new ones, when we gather in the Youth Center at Union Chapel United Methodist Church, 4622 North Broadway Avenue in Muncie. We look forward to seeing clergy spouses there!
