INDIANAPOLIS - Ron Hunter, the IUPUI coach featured in the February issue of Together, was name ABC Person of the Week for his "courageous act" of coaching barefoot on Jan. 24. He was promoting the Samaritan's Feet project to provide 40,000 pairs of shoes to kids who have no shoes in developing countries.
Also on Jan. 24 national shoe companies had become involved promising 110,000 pairs of shoes.
An anonymous donor has offered to fly Ron Hunter, his whole team, IUPUI officials as well to Africa to deliver the shoes in July. The whole team plans to go.
The Colts want to partner with Samaritan's Feet, too, for an event next fall. The Pacers want to do the same thing in the spring.
Calvary UMC in Brownsburg is planning to send shoes to a church in South Africa.
The Rev. Andrea Leininger, pastor of Bethel UMC, who promoted Samaritan's Feet, collected 292 pairs of shoes from her Indianapolis congregation. Coach Hunter plans to speak at Bethel one Sunday to say, "thanks."
