CORYDON, Ind. – The Indiana Conference presented the 2014 Denman Award for Evangelism’s clergy award to the Rev. Tim Johnson, pastor of Pfrimmer’s Chapel United Methodist Church located in the country five miles east of Corydon.
The Rev. Jim Bushfield, conference director of Connectional Ministry, recently presented the award to Johnson at the church. This isolated country church has more than 300 worshipers in what Bushfield described as three distinctly different services.
“From handshakes on the parking lot to the greeting during worship, it is easy to see why this congregation is growing. They all have picked up on Tim’s enthusiasm. They are sincerely glad to see new people at church. When the pastor welcomes new friends to worship, the congregation proclaims, ‘Welcome Home!’ and you know they mean it,” said Bushfield.
The Denman Award for Evangelism, given in several conferences across The United Methodist Church, is presented in Indiana each year to a pastor, a layperson and a youth, who demonstrate exceptional ability to lead persons to a faith in Christ and active involvement in a life with Christ. Johnson was nominated by the lay leaders in his congregation and was selected by the Conference Discipleship Resource Team and was approved by the Indiana Annual Conference Session as the recipient of the Clergy Award.
“The award was presented to Johnson in this church to allow the congregation to celebrate this honor with a pastor they truly love,” said Bushfield.
Under Tim’s leadership, Pfrimmer’s Chapel has indentified and supported 30 people in their call to leadership, many of them going on to serve as clergy in Indiana. This summer, they organized a camp for youth with over 120 youth and 80 adult leaders that resulted in 71 youth giving their life to Christ and being baptized. They believe in the importance of mission.
Their vision is 52 mission trips a year. Johnson says his vision is for “one team to be going and one coming home every week.”
Each summer, church members give away a meal in town during the largest festival of the year. They want everyone to have an opportunity to know Jesus.
Bushfield said, “They love Jesus and you can feel it.”
He went on to say, “It was an honor to present this award to the Rev. Tim Johnson at Pfrimmer’s Chapel and to celebrate with them the leadership of a pastor truly worthy of receiving the Denman Award for Evangelism.”
