INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana Bishop Mike Coyner announced May 19 the appointment of the Rev. Samuel L. Padgett, pastor of Mt. Etna United Methodist Church in Huntington, Ind., as the new Indiana Conference Associate Director Leadership Development – Clergy effective July 1. He succeeds the Rev. Sandy Harlan, who retired from this position July 1.

Upon his announcement, Coyner said, “We are pleased to welcome Sam to the conference staff, serving in the position which has been so faithfully served by Sandy Harlan. As a young clergy who has just recently gone through the candidacy process, Sam will bring a fresh perspective to the position along with good skills to help the Board of Ordained Ministry as they process new candidates for ministry.”

In this position, Padgett will be responsible for maintaining records and providing support and training for District Committees on Ordained Ministry and the Conference Board of Ordained Ministry.

He will serve with the Rev. Eleze Fulbright, the first Indiana Conference Director of Leadership Development, who also begins her duties July 1.

Padgett, 34, serves as Elder in the Indiana Conference and was just ordained Elder at the recent Indiana Annual Conference Session. He has served the Mt. Etna congregation since 2011. Since 2003, he also has served other Indiana United Methodist churches including Old Capital and Corydon in Corydon, Trinity in Oakland City, Hamline and Monroe City in Monroe City and Velpen in Petersburg.

He is a graduate of Oakland City (Ind.) University (B.A. in Religious Studies) and Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Ky. (M.Div.).

Before his call to ordained ministry, Padgett served as an insurance sales representative in Vincennes, Ind.

He and his wife, Melissa, are the parents of four children and currently live in Fishers, Ind.
