Russiaville church assembles ‘Buddy Bags’ each week for Kokomo Urban Ministries
RUSSIAVILLE, Ind. – The first Thursday afternoon of the month during the school year, an amazing thing happens at the Russiaville United Methodist Church. Almost like magic, nearly 60 volunteers of all ages from throughout the community come together for the monthly packing of the Western Buddy Bags. In just 30 minutes of time the work is completed on the four previously set-up assembly lines. Strong cooperation by families, school clubs, and local churches proves the key to the way the bags can so smoothly and quickly be prepared. The supply for the current week is swiftly loaded into waiting vans for delivery to Western School, while the remaining three weeks’ supply is stored in a nearby classroom for subsequent deliveries. Cardboard cartons are taken to the recycling receptacle at the Town Hall. The bags contain staples for six meals each weekend and are distributed to K-3 graders in families deemed to be “food insecure.” Buddy Bags is just one of many programs offered through Kokomo Urban Outreach, seeking to be the “hands and feet of Jesus” while offering hope, connecting communities and strengthening families – neighborhood-by-neighborhood.
