Mount Carmel Tutors celebrated program begun by Rockdale UMC members

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ind. – Each month, the school board recognizes the accomplishments of some activity in the Franklin County Schools. This month, it is the volunteer tutoring program at Mount Carmel School. Teacher Missy Pepper explained the program as a slide show played in the background. Tutors come to the school at the end of classes each Monday. They give the students a snack, get them settled and then help them with lessons or homework until about 4:30 p.m. The program originated in a proposal from members of the Rockdale United Methodist Church in the fall of 2012 and has grown to include 19 tutors ranging from high-school student to retired teachers. This year, the program has provided service to 42 students. The student-tutor ratio is kept low so that all the students get personal attention – often it is 1:1 but never more than 3:1. – From the Franklin County Observer
