Franklin Community to host open house event Sunday, July 25

The Franklin United Methodist Community, a continuing care retirement community, is hosting an Open House event of its Cottage Homes on Sunday, July 25 from 1 to 4 p.m.

Tours of homes will be provided, as well as time to have questions answered by staff and to enjoy refreshments. Tours start at the Clubhouse located at 565 Robin Road, on the north side of the 120-acre campus. Visitors need to follow the signs as they enter from Jefferson Street (Hwy 44).

The retirement neighborhood has nearly 200 independent homes including single ranch style homes and lovely two-bedroom duplexes. All are “maintenance free” to allow active older adults to spend their time at the indoor pool, wellness center, art studio, greenhouse, in workshop, or on one of many trips offered to residents. Paul's second, third missionary journeys to become Hoosier journey

The Parthenon in Athens, Greece will be one of many stops on Paul’s missionary journey cruise on the Mediterranean Sea hosted by Bishop Coyner next year. Join Indiana Bishop Mike Coyner and the Indiana Conference on a 13-day cruise in November 2011. Working with Educational Opportunities, Coyner has chosen a customized trip that offers a unique opportunity. Participants will visit the Parthenon in Athens, stand on the synagogue bema where Paul preached in Corinth, worship in the ancient marble city of Ephesus, spend a day around the Sea of Galilee in Israel, visit the Giza Pyramids in Egypt, and explore ancient Christian Rome, including a visit to the Coliseum. Brochures are available and those who register by August 5, 2010, will save $150 per person. The CONNECT Youth Worker Roundtables scheduled for Aug.-Sept.

Connect*Share*Learn*Refresh All who work with youth in the local church (volunteers, paid-staff, pastors) are invited for a day focused on supporting you and your ministry with youth. Choose one, a combination or all three of the options at each location:

  • 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Roundtable Lunch – Share and learn with others in ministry with youth.
  • 2 to 5 p.m. Soul-Tending Workshop – A Sabbath afternoon designed for you, with tools you can use in ministry with youth
  • 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Youth Worker Dinner - Connect with fruitful youth ministry practices.

Benefit Jazz Concert for Children of Abraham coming to South Bend Sept. 9

Enjoy some great jazz music by Bryan Lubeck, David Wells and the Jim Pickley Trio while rising money to help fund the work of Children of Abraham! The trio will perform a Benefit Jazz Concert for Children of Abraham on Thursday, Sept. 9 from 7:30 to 10 p.m. at the O’Laughlin Auditorium on the campus of St. Mary’s College, Moreau Center for the Arts in Notre Dame, Ind. Adults: $20, Senior Citizens: $17

Children of Abraham: In 2003, a few community members in Northwest Indiana began discussing how to better understand each other by defining common goals and helping others globally. Children of Abraham, Inc., a 100 percent volunteer-driven nonprofit organization, was formed in 2004 with the principal mission of helping relieve suffering around the world by providing free medical supplies and equipment to medically underserved countries. Children of Abraham is supported by the North District United Methodist Church, St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church and the Northwest Indiana Islamic Center. They have already sent four shipments of supplies to Haiti and are working on a fifth.

IRL Ministry to host first Family Fun Night in Indianapolis July 29

The Indy Racing League Ministry will host its first Family Fun Night Thursday, July 29, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Rascal’s Fun Zone on the south side of Indianapolis (US 31 at Whiteland). In addition to racing and games, there will be IZOD Indy Car drivers, Firestone Indy Lights drivers and pictures with drivers. Help support the IRL Ministry. Author Piper to speak July 30 in Carmel

Zoë's Bone Marrow Buddies presents “Gathering for Hope and Inspiration,” an Evening with Don Piper, author of 90 Minutes in Heaven. Indianapolis church to host American Indiana Sunday Aug. 22

St. Luke’s UMC, 100 W. 86th Street in Indianapolis will be hosting an American Indian Sunday Celebration on Sunday, Aug. 22 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will feature cultural displays, demonstrations, arts, crafts, storytelling, musical performances, literary guests and much more. This event is for all age groups and will include an extensive representation of the American Indian community of Indianapolis. In addition to this event, the feature film “Smoke Signals” will be screened by Dr. Larry Zimmerman on Friday, Aug. 20 at 7 p.m. in the church’s fellowship hall. Author of The Kite Runner to speak at Evansville University Oct. 21

The Institute for Global Enterprise in Indiana at the United Methodist-related University of Evansville and the Evansville Celebration of Diversity Distinguished Lecture Series will bring author Khaled Hosseini to Evansville for a joint event on October 21. Hosseini, author of The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, will speak at the Aiken Theatre at the Centre at 7 p.m., as part of a shared event between the UE Institute for Global Enterprise in Indiana International Speaker Series and the Evansville Celebration of Diversity Distinguished Lecture Series. The event is the first collaboration between the two groups, both of which seek to expose the Evansville community to renowned, thought-provoking individuals who spark dialogue on multiple levels. The event is free and open to the public.

Workshop for clergy to consider: Will my money run out in retirement?

Will you have enough income to provide for you or you and your spouse in retirement? Should you be saving more now? These and other questions will be addressed at the Pre-retirement Workshop for clergy and spouses who are eligible to retire in 5 to 10 years (2016-2021). The workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and includes lunch at the Indiana Conference Center (first level Conference Room), 301 Pennsylvania Parkway, Indianapolis, IN 46280.
