World Food Program Presents Children’s Choir Benefit Concert

The friends of the World Food Program Committee of Indianapolis invites you to join them for an Indianapolis Children’s Choir: Benefit Performance to Alleviate World Hunger Sunday, March 7 at 2 p.m. at Pike Performing Arts Center, 6701 Zionsville Road, Indianapolis Advance Tickets only $10, available at selected Marsh Stores. NEWLY HIGHLIGHTED EVENT

Wesley Manor to host portrayal of C.S. Lewis, March 16

Wesley Manor Retirement Community will host a special presentation by Dr. Kevin Radaker, a professor at Anderson University. He will give a dramatic portrayal of C.S. Lewis entitled, “A Visit from C.S. Lewis.” This program gives insight into the life and writings of one of the most renowned Christian authors of the 20th century on Tuesday, March 16 at 6:30 p.m. in Harmony Hall. Showers Lectures at UIndy to feature Notre Dame Professor, April 6

The 2010 Showers Lectures at the University of Indianapolis will take place on Tuesday April 6. Father David Burrell, Emeritus Professor of Philosophy and Theology of the University of Notre Dame, will be giving this year’s lectures. The focus of this year’s lectureship is Christian Approaches to Interfaith Relations. The first lecture will take place at 4 p.m. in McCleary Chapel in the Schwitzer Student Center at 1400 East Hanna Avenue on the south-side of Indianapolis. The title of that presentation is “What I (as a Christian) Have Learned from Muslims Classical and Contemporary.”

The second presentation will take place at 7 p.m. in the same location. The title of that lecture is “Persistent Problems in Muslim-Christian-Jewish Interactions.” These lectures are free and open to the public. For more information please contact Cindy Tyree at 317-788-2106.

Burrell is an internationally renowned Christian theologian who has contributed much to interfaith understanding. This event promises to be a significant opportunity for exploring what Christians can learn from other faith traditions even as we engage the persistent problems that have made interfaith interaction difficult in the past. North America Christian Ashram to celebrate 70 years during national retreat in July

The North America Christian Ashram entitled “Kingdom Living in the 21st Century” is scheduled for July 13-16 on the grounds of Lake Junaluska Camp and Conference Center in North Carolina. This retreat will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Christian Ashram movement in the United States.

This Christian Ashram is designed for the entire family, will host Bishop James Swanson, Dr. Maxie Dunnam, Bishop William W. Hutchinson, Dr. Evelyn Laycock, Bishop Richard Looney and the Rev. Dr. Diane Walker as keynote speakers.

Registration for the event is $60 per person ages 21 and over, $30 per person ages 62+. The maximum family fee for registration is $150. Registration fees should be mailed to B. Ruth Fazal to perform at Bedford First UMC

Ruth Fazal is an amazing violinist, composer and worship leader. She was originally born in the UK but makes her home in Toronto, Canada where she is the choirmaster of four orchestras.

UM-Related Community Center Celebrates Literacy Mission

INDIANAPOLIS – The Brightwood Community Center Literacy Center will hold an open house on Wednesday, March 24. Brightwood is located at 2410 N. Station Street, one block west of Sherman Drive, in a brick church with a green steeple. Enter from the back of the building.

Brightwood invited Indiana Bishop Mike Coyner to be a part of this celebration. The National Council on Educating Black Children’s Executive Director, Diana Daniels, also plans to be present. NCEBC sponsors the Literacy Center at Brightwood Community Center.

Volunteers from Carmel St. Mark’s in Castleton, Horizons of Faith in Broad Ripple and Lawrence United Methodist run the program on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings during the school year. The new program began on Jan. 12 and will be the primary focus of the center’s summer camp this year. Brightwood is a Conference Advance Special.

The tentative schedule for the open house includes:

  • 5:00 p.m. – Literacy Center with children arriving and meal prepared for them. (normal schedule for the kids)
  • 5:30 p.m.– Literacy Center with children in their learning centers
  • 5:45 p.m. – Adults and parents arrive and will be able to listen in on the learning centers.
  • 6:30 p.m. – Children will join in the celebration with refreshments.
Stewardship-Philanthropy event coming to Indiana, April 14-16

The North American Conference on Christian Philanthropy will be held on April 14-16 in Indianapolis at the Sheraton Hotel City Centre. NACCP is designed for pastors, lay leaders, church finance administrators as well as gift and financial planning professionals The event will feature plenary sessions with Dr. Bill Enright, director of the Lake Family Institute, John Wimmer of the Lilly Endowment, Inc. and Dr. Una Osili, director of the IU Center of Philanthropy. Participants will have the opportunity to choose from 27 workshops during the two-day conference. An Advance Seminar also is being offered on Wednesday April 14, from 1 to 4 p.m. Charles Schultz, president of Crescendo Interactive will present a workshop titled “Maximum Donor Contacts on Limited Marketing Budgets.” For more information, visit www.naccp.net.

Dalai Lama to Speak at Conseco in Indianapolis on May 14

His Holiness the Dalai Lama will give a public talk at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on Friday, May 14 at 9:30 a.m. The program will be hosted by the Indianapolis-based Indiana Buddhist Center (IBC) and the Interfaith Hunger Initiative (IHI) of Indianapolis and the Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center of Bloomington. The title of the talk, “Facing Challenges with Compassion and Wisdom,” reflects the core mission of these groups as well as speaking directly to issues central to today’s world. Tickets for the Indianapolis event are available at the Conseco box office or at area Ticketmaster locations. General admission tickets are $25; student tickets are $15. GA/GAM-ANON 2010 National Conference Coming to Louisville

The 2010 National GA/ GAM-ANON Conference “Keys to Recovery” will be held May 21-23 at the Galt House Hotel in downtown Louisville, Ky. This will be an exceptional opportunity for Hoosiers to gather with people from across the nation to attend quality workshops and hear outstanding, personal testimonies about recovery from gambling compulsions.
