INDIANAPOLIS AREA CHURCHES TO HOST BLACK HISTORY MONTH CONCERT
- Feb. 28 at 6 p.m. at St. Luke’s UMC in Indianapolis
- Proceeds benefit Barnes Community Center
- Tickets are $8 in advance for adults and $4 for children ages 8 to 17. Children 7 and younger are free. At the door tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children.

NEWLY HIGHLIGHTED EVENT
DALAI LAMA TO SPEAK AT CONSECO IN INDIANAPOLIS ON MAY 14
His Holiness the Dalai Lama will give a public talk at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on Friday, May 14 at 9:30 a.m. The program will be hosted by the Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center (TMBCC) of Bloomington, the Indianapolis-based Indiana Buddhist Center (IBC) and the Interfaith Hunger Initiative (IHI) of Indianapolis. The title of the talk, “Facing Challenges with Compassion and Wisdom,” reflects the core mission of these groups as well as speaking directly to issues central to today’s world. The TMBCC will also host His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s sixth visit to Bloomington, where he will give three public teachings at Indiana University Auditorium on May 12 and 13. The topic of his teachings will be ‘The Heart Sutra’ that expresses the importance of compassion and wisdom – qualities that lie at the heart of the Buddhist religion.

UM-RELATED COMMUNITY CENTER CELEBRATES LITERACY MISSION
INDIANAPOLIS – The Brightwood Community Center Literacy Center will hold an open house on Wednesday, March 24. Brightwood is located at 2410 N. Station Street, one block west of Sherman Drive, in a brick church with a green steeple. Enter from the back of the building.
Brightwood invited Indiana Bishop Mike Coyner to be a part of this celebration. The National Council on Educating Black Children’s Executive Director, Diana Daniels, also plans to be present. NCEBC sponsors the Literacy Center at Brightwood Community Center.
Volunteers from Carmel St. Mark’s in Castleton, Horizons of Faith in Broad Ripple and Lawrence United Methodist run the program on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings during the school year. The new program began on Jan. 12 and will be the primary focus of the center’s summer camp this year. Brightwood is a Conference Advance Special.
The tentative schedule for the open house includes:
- 5:00 p.m. – Literacy Center with children arriving and meal prepared for them. (normal schedule for the kids)
- 5:30 p.m.– Literacy Center with children in their learning centers
- 5:45 p.m. – Adults and parents arrive and will be able to listen in on the learning centers.
- 6:30 p.m. – Children will join in the celebration with refreshments.
STEWARDSHIP-PHILANTHROPY EVENT COMING TO INDIANA
The North American Conference on Christian Philanthropy will be held on April 14-16 in Indianapolis at the Sheraton Hotel City Centre. NACCP is designed for pastors, lay leaders, church finance administrators as well as gift and financial planning professionals The event will feature plenary sessions with Dr. Bill Enright, director of the Lake Family Institute, John Wimmer of the Lilly Endowment, Inc. and Dr. Una Osili, director of the IU Center of Philanthropy. Participants will have the opportunity to choose from 27 workshops during the two-day conference. An Advance Seminar also is being offered on Wednesday April 14, from 1 to 4 p.m. Charles Schultz, president of Crescendo Interactive will present a workshop titled “Maximum Donor Contacts on Limited Marketing Budgets.” For more information, visit www.naccp.net.

The 2010 National GA/ GAM-ANON Conference “Keys to Recovery” will be held May 21-23 at the Galt House Hotel in downtown Louisville, Ky. This will be an exceptional opportunity for Hoosiers to gather with people from across the nation to attend quality workshops and hear outstanding, personal testimonies about recovery from gambling compulsions. REJUVENATE, MET-LIFE TO OFFER SEMINAR ON RETIREMENT FINANCES
Rejuvenate is partnering with Met-Life to offer a three-session seminar called retirewise, which offers financial education for retirement. This three-session seminar is for clergy and clergy spouses. The sessions will be held on Mondays, March 1, 8 and 15 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. for the first session, and from 6 to 8 p.m. for the second and third sessions. It will be held at First United Methodist Church, 201 East Third Street in Seymour, Ind. The cost is $15 per couple for the three sessions.
The three-session seminar will also be offered this fall on Tuesday, Nov. 9, 16 and 23 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. for the first session, and from 6 to 8 p.m. for the second and third sessions. It will be held at First United Methodist Church, 400 North Michigan Street in Plymouth, Ind. The cost is $15 per couple for the three sessions. Child care will be available on request.

RETIRED PASTOR TO HOST 11-DAY TRIP TO MEDITERRANEAN
Retired United Methodist Pastor Fred Bishop and his wife Brenda will host a 11-day trip (including seven-day cruise) to Athens, Istanbul, Ephesus and Corinth and including five Greek Isles of Mykonos, Patmos, Rhodes, Crete and Santorini, Oct. 13-23. Cost is $2,699 round-trip from Indianapolis. Space will soon become limited at this price. Deadline for full payment is July 6.
