Building Discipleship Centers

The Indiana Conference of The United Methodist Church (INUMC) is the collective ministry of 1,000 pastoral appointments to 1,120 churches, ministering to more than 200,000 adult members and 40,000 children and youth. Together, the mission is to “make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world” through its shared vision, core process, and values.

Executive Summary
There are more than 40,000 children and youth in the United Methodist Churches in Indiana. These youth are tomorrow’s leaders; “How shall they hear?”.

How do we help the next generation hear the call of Christ on their lives? How do we help the 200,000 adult members of our churches become better leaders in their congregations? The opportunity is great and immediate.

Our heritage is deeply rooted in a belief that God calls us into service. For many youth and adults that “call” came in a special setting apart from our normal community in a camp or retreat setting. Today we call those Discipleship Centers.

Every local church is a discipleship center, a place where disciples are called, nurtured, and challenged to change the world into God’s Kingdom. As a connection of churches we are able to provide special places where we can work together outside of the walls of our church buildings and focus on hearing God’s invitation and challenge.

Bishop Michael J Coyner has led Indiana United Methodists for the last 12 years to a clear understanding of the urgency of “making disciples of Jesus Christ”. That means inviting new people to become disciples and helping those who have already received the grace of God to grow into deeper and more generous followers of Christ.

The goal of this campaign is to develop new and well-equipped Discipleship Centers in Indiana. There is urgent need to replace the 90-year-old auditorium at Epworth Forest Conference Center with new facilities designed for multi-use programming all year long. That is our primary goal.

If we could do more – our camp in south-central Indiana was built around a lake for meditation and recreation. It was built over aquifers that could not hold water over time. Modern technology now permits us to affordably build new lakes restoring the beautiful and peaceful waterfront setting where the presence of Christ can be felt at Camp Indicoso.

And if we could do more – we already have gifts toward a new lodge at Epworth in honor of Stan Buck; additional funds can add a third retreat facility.

And if we could do more – we could provide scholarships for families with financial need to attend camp.

Our Goals
$9,000,000 - Project Goal
$6M - Epworth Discipleship Center Project
$1.3M - Buck Lodge Project
$925K - Camp Indicoso Lake Project

RECENT NEWS:

Email sent to Volunteers, Clergy, Campers, Etc.:
Exciting things have begun at Epworth Forest Conference Center. Our Indiana Conference UMC is launching a capital campaign, "Building Discipleship Centers", where the lead goal is to develop a new learning and worship space that will replace the existing auditorium. Initial interest with donors and supporters is very high in this early phase, there is great reason for excitement. To be clear though, the auditorium is not currently scheduled for demolition and will not be until all funds have been raised to build the new facility.

At First Thing, Bishop Coyner will be joining us to help us celebrate the many years and hundreds of thousands of lives that have been impacted in this auditorium that was built 90 years ago. He will also share the exciting vision of what is yet to come as our conference strives forward in making disciples for Jesus Christ.
