Bishop Mike Retirement Celebration
Retirement Celebration for Bishop Mike and Marsha Coyner
Tonight, we celebrated the end of an unforgettable era. Clergy, lay members, guests, and youth from all over the Indiana Conference gathered to commemorate Bishop Mike and Marsha Coyner, whose tenure has had tremendous impact on the lives of pastors, peers, churchgoers, and even those who have yet realized the infinite love of Jesus Christ.
In light of the Bishop’s retirement, many gifts were presented in his honor. The most significant; the Building Discipleship Centers Campaign, which has surpassed the collective goal of $7,289, 279, with a grand total of $7,380,153. In addition, the committee has voted to name the structure “The Bishop Mike and Marsha Coyner Epworth Discipleship Center", with a groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for Sunday, August 7. Cindy Reynolds proclaimed,” young people and people of all ages can become leaders of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.” Other gifts included tickets to King’s Island as well as season tickets to Purdue University Basketball, Bishop Mike's Alma mater and favorite team.
As the night progressed, we were treated to personal recollections from clergy and conference staff who have an extensive history of working closely with the Bishop. Craig LaSuer, who served as Bishop Mike’s colleague at Good Shepherd UMC, shared tales of a young, yet wise, neat, and reserved Michael Coyner, who openly allowed LaSuer to teepee the Coyner’s home, but was less nonchalant about LaSuer playing with his hair.
Bishop Mike and Marsha Coyner will officially retire on August 31, 2016 but their journey and ministry will extend far beyond that time. Though, we’ve been utterly thankful for their service, The United Methodist Churches of Indiana are overjoyed for whatever blessings life may bring in the years to come. In the words of John Grove, District Superintendent of the West District, “We are honored, privileged, and tremendously blessed to have worked alongside Bishop Mike and Marsha Coyner.” God bless Bishop Mike.
