Prayers offered at Conference and Community Prayer Breakfast

Here are the prayers that were offered at the Conference and Community Prayer Breakfast Saturday, June 9 during the Indiana Annual Conference Session. The prayers were offered by the Rev. Matthew Landry, pastor of the Winamac UMC in Northwest District, with his wife, Candace, co-chairs of the prayer breakfast.

A Prayer for Justice

Almighty God, you have given all peoples one common origin. It is your will that they be gathered together as one family in yourself. Fill our hearts with the fire of your love and with the desire to ensure justice for all. By sharing the good things you give us, may we secure equality for all our brothers and sisters throughout the world and in Indiana.

May there be an end to division, strife and war. May there be a dawning of justice in our world, state and communities, built on love and peace, and where we make room for all people.

This we ask in Christ’s name.

A Prayer for Peace

A Prayer Adapted from Sr. Joan Chittister’s “A Prayer for Peace”

O God, save us from our desire to hurt as we have been hurt and to punish as we have been punished.

Give us the strength it takes to listen rather than to judge, to trust rather than to fear, to try again and again to make peace even when peace eludes us.

We ask, O God, for the grace to be our best selves. We ask for the vision to be builders of the human community rather than its destroyers. We ask for the humility as a people to understand the fears and hopes of other peoples.

We ask for the heart it takes to care for all the peoples of the world, in Asia, Africa, Europe, the Americas and in Indiana as well.

Give us the depth of soul, O God, to constrain our might, to resist the temptations of power, to refuse to attack the attackable, to understand that vengeance begets violence, and to bring peace–not war –wherever we go.

For You, O God, have been merciful to us. For You, O God, have been patient with us. For You, O God, have been gracious to us. And so may we be merciful and patient and gracious and trusting with these others whom you also love.

This we ask in Christ’s name.

A Prayer for Forgiveness

Almighty God, forgive us when we fail to make room for you in our lives. Remove the barriers that keep us from following your way. Forgive us for being self-centered in our prayers. Forgive us for not making room for others in our homes, churches and communities.

Teach us to pray for others. Give us eyes to see those in our communities who are in need of your love. May we be so bound up in love with those for whom we pray, that we may feel their needs as intensely as our own and pray for them with understanding and imagination.

This we ask in Christ’s name.

A Prayer for Unity

O God, you are the hope of all the ends of the earth and throughout this great land we call Indiana. Hear our prayer for all people and families on earth and in Indiana that you will turn all hearts to yourself. Remove from our minds hatred, prejudice, and contempt for those who are different than us, that, departing from everything that estranges and divides, we may be brought into the unity of your Spirit, in the bond of peace.

From the shores of Lake Michigan to the banks of the Ohio, may you bless our great state with your peace and reconciliation. May you bless our legislators, our Governor and those that serve our state, that they may work together, not just as Democrats or Republicans, but as Americans. May you bless the universal Christian church and The United Methodist Church of Indiana, that we may be united in our call to make disciples of your Son, Jesus Christ. This we ask in Christ’s name.
